Robert John was the son of the late William Hugh and Mary Jane Magill of Main Street, Larne, and grandson of Andrew McNeill of Killyglen.

Notes

Before enlisting he had been employed by John Fullerton of Larne as a watchmaker.

His brother William Spencer died in action at the battle of Mons on 13 September 1914.
